Famous Trials in History

Famous Trials offers lots of historical information about important legal cases throughout history from the trial of Socrates to the Clinton impeachment hearings as well as information about famous [and infamous] attorneys in history.  Each case includes not only a narration of the historical event, it also includes primary source information about the case.  The site is put together by Douglass Linder at the Universy of Missouri - Kansas City.

Rulers of the World

Rulers gives you the information about the leaders of various countries and their subregions throughout the world.  All countries are listed and some records go back as far as 1700.  The site also includes foreign ministers and religious leaders.  The guide is based upon name of the country/territory but their is a Google search engine on the page to search by name of leader or title.

Center for Jewish History

The Center for Jewish History offers an extensive amount of history about Judaism and Jewish culture with archives, resources for teacher, genealogical information and more.  The center also offers finding aids, electronic resources, and financial support to assist researchers take advantage of its resources.

History for Kids

History for Kids offers kid-friendly history from all over the world and through all areas of history.  In addition to print information, the site also offers multi-media instruction, educational activities, and teachers' guides.  The site is supported by ads [includes pop-ups] and some of them can be bothersome but you can subscribe to an add-free version of the site for 99 cents for a week ad-free.

Searchable Death Indexes and Records

Deathindexes.com offers links to searchable death indexes and records, probate records, death notices, obituaries, cemetary and burial records throughout the United States.  While the links and information offered is directed primarily at those seeking to do genealogy research, the information is useful for anyone involved in historical investigation.  The site also gives information on how to use the Social Security death index.

World History Pages

World History.com offers resources on events that happened on "This Day In History".  You can also use their search engine to find articles on various subjects and important events related to that subject.  Finally, they offer a store selling historically related items.

The site is a good source for either quick information or for clearing away some of the chaff you might find searching via google or yahoo.

British History at the BBC

The BBC-History site is focused on general history topics, including special sections on historical figures and various topics. Encyclopedic in nature, it also has a good deal of interactive educational content - especially in British history.  This is a site designed both for those who are getting their feet wet in a particular area as well as for educators who may be looking at good material for classroom presentations.

Memories of Russia

alexanderpalace.org offers a collection of websites devoted to the study of late imperial Russia with a special focus on the life of the nobility and the court.  These sites offer lots of beautiful pictures and images as well as much good biographical material.

Resources for the history of science

Dr. Paul Halsall has assembled a plethora of primary and secondary copyright free material dedicated to the history of science.  Links cover science and scientists from ancient times to the present.  Unfortunately, the site doesn't appear to have been updated since 2001 - but there is a lot of good material here that can be used both in the classroom and in personal research.

The continuing contribution of women to science

4000 Years of Women in Science shows the tremendous contribution women have made to scientific studies throughout human history through biographies, photos, and other links.  While there is a very impressive list of the many women in science, the site has not been updated for awhile and many of the biographies are very brief.
